Choc-Chip Date Cake

1 cup dates, cut up
1 tsp soda
1 cup hot water (Pour water over dates and let stand.)
1 cup sugar
1 cup oleo
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla (Add dates alternately with)
1 and 1/4 cup flour and 1 tbsp cocoa, mixed.
1/2 package choc-chips (small size). (Save the other half).

Mix well and pour into a 9 and 1/2 by 13 inch cake pan. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 package of choc-chips on top along with 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. This cake doesn't need frosting, but is good served with ice cream or whipped cream.
